Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will we meet in person or online?
At the current time, all of our sessions will be conducted online, with the focus entirely on you and what you hope we can achieve together.
  • What should we expect from therapy?
I offer a non-judgemental and supportive environment in which you can speak about difficult things. My aim is to help you understand your patterns of communication, and improve them so that you can enjoy more satisfying relationships together. My focus is to allow everyone in the room to hear each other’s perspectives, as well as encouraging each person to make requests of one another. I find it helpful that we establish the goals of the therapy, and then through this process think about practical ways for you to communicate together.
  • Do you only work with couples and / or families / Do you work with individuals?
I work with all permutations of relational systems. This means, I use my skills and understandings of relationships to work with any combination of relationships. This may be working with colleagues to support their relational dilemmas, couples, families as a whole of parts of the familial subsystem. When I work with individuals, I work with a systemic lens. This means understanding the problems in people's lives as connected to their lived experience, relationships and the wider contextual factors.
  • How does couples therapy work?
At first, I'll meet you as a couple, but I may also suggest meeting you individually. I create a safe environment, without judgment, for each of you to be able to talk together, particularly when about things that leave you feeling triggered and emotionally charged. The couple therapy environment is an opportunity to find new ways to talk together, and to reflect on why you find it difficult to speak like this ordinarily. Therapy can help bring you closer together, resolve conflicts and repair wounds.
  • What will couples therapy achieve?
Couples therapy will not magically resolve all of your problems, and nor is that the aim. It is much more about forging new ways of talking together and holding onto new patterns of communication when you find yourselves in a difficult conversation. I am here to encourage you to be clumsy and playful in how you talk together so that you can move towards a position of softness and more joyful connection. And, sometimes, it might simply be that your commitment to each other is coming to an end. Couples therapy can be there to support each of you with the many resulting difficult emotions, and help ease what may otherwise be a painful transition – especially when children are involved.
  • How does family therapy work?
I would look at your different family roles, understand how they became what they are, and explore how these relationships can be used as both a source of support and an opportunity for change. Together we will find more effective ways to communicate and resolve dilemmas so that your relationships are more satisfying and fulfilling. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that all of your lives are more connected. Initially, I'll meet you as a family group, and subsequently may suggest we meet in different permutations, or possibly even individual sessions.
  • How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions is very subjective and linked to the readiness to make change and the willingness to actively work in the therapy process. We will work together to set a goal and this will influence the length of the therapy. This will be a collaborative process and we can work towards determining the number of sessions required. We evaluate the goals together and continually consider the focus of the work together. Sessions are 60-minutes long.
  • What are your payment terms?
Payment for the first session must be made 48 hours before the scheduled session. For sessions thereafter, payment should be made no later than 48 hours after the end of each session. Payment should be made via a bank transfer.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
Please let me know 48 hours before the session if you're unable to make it. The full charge for the session will be otherwise charged. I appreciate there may be unexpected and urgent need to cancel sessions and this will be considered.
